the aftermath

hey fellow gardeners

1. a HUGE thank you to everyone who came out last night for the dig. it was the best one yet and I couldn't have done it without you guys.

2. I hope many of you have gotten a chance to see all the news stories that aired today about the dig! If you didn't, you can check out my facebook group for a complete listing of the news stories. Here's a sample story. Overall the stations did a great job with the story. To clarify, though, I am not a nonprofit organization. I have no tax exempt status. I am simply a woman in chicago who organizes people. anyone can do it!

3. i haven't uploaded the pictures yet, so I will post a complete overview of last night's dig when i go through the photos!

happy digging

donate to the cause!

I've never done this before, and i'm not sure if it works, but i tried to set up a paypay account to enlist donations for future digs. The next dig is going to be great! I've planned a really exciting one. We're going to plant the word BREATHE underneath the Blue Line between california and logan square. It's going to be more expensive to ensure it is visible from the passengers. If you can donate to the cause and want to test out my pay pal set up, please feel free to try! otherwise I hope to see you at the dig. It is next Wednesday, June 16th at 10pm. We'll be at an empty lot off of Medill at Milwaukee! Any questions, please feel free to contact me!

first dig of the season!

chicago participated in International Sunflower Guerilla Gardening Day 2010!

Since we do our digs at night, I planned the dig for Friday, April 30th so that first thing saturday morning would be sunflowers. I scouted out a site earlier in the week and decided on the intersection of Chicago & State. It's not exactly an under-represented part of the city, but I wanted it to be in a highly visible place and it's less than a block away from a really great nonprofit, Access Living. And as you can see f
rom the pictures, the place could use a little extra love.

One predicament: Sunflowers are not really sprouting this time of year. Did not think of this in advance. INSTEAD I bought a bunch of flowers that LOOKED like sunflowers (marigolds) and bought some fake sunflowers to put in the ground. Also: sunflower seeds.

On Friday I had definitely overbooked myself. I had to get up at 5:00am to teach yoga. Then I taught t
wo more classes and assisted in a 2-hour inversion workshop. AFTER ALL OF THAT I went down to the spot to see who was going to show up. A really great mix of people showed up: John, who heard about Guerrilla Gardening at the Food and Farm Expo, my boyfriend Stephen and a few of his friends Grace and Bryce. Old timer and good friend Pam came out, too! She brought the most beautiful Marigolds to plant!

There was a looking hurricane coming the entire night and so we were extra efficient. Lots of people stopped us to ask what we were doing-- this was definitely the most visible spot to date. It turned out beautiful and we literally took the last group shot about 10 seconds before a downpour.

overall: great time, good peeps and some serious beautification

International Sunflower Day

gardener alert!

May 1st is International Sunflower Day.
Guerrilla Gardeners around the world (you didn't think we were the only ones, did you??) will be planting sunflowers in their neighborhoods.

Since my digs are always at night (what can I say.. I like the ninja-like aspect of planting at night and the instant gratification of waking up to something new and beautiful) I am planning on doing a dig April 30th so that the flowers will be alive and kickin' for their special day.

Location TBD
Sunflowers WELCOME! If you can come, please try to bring a sunflower or two! the more the better. As always, I will provide whatever is in my budget, but half the fun is doing it together.

I'll keep you posted

this weekend and more!

hey gardeners

if you haven't committed to any plans this weekend, this is your reminder to check out the Food & Farm Expo. It's thursday - saturday.. tons of great speakers, chefs, farmers, gardeners and foodies are gathering for a conference geared towards sustainable agriculture and urban lifestyles.

ALSO: there's a Localicious party on Friday featuring delicious foods from some of chicago's top restaurants that all support local and organic food. tickets are 75 dollars, but for the calibur of food it is way worth it! yum!

also keep in mind: the growing season is starting soon so I will be planning the year's first guerrilla gardening dig soon. I'm always open for suggestions as to a good location. Here are some of my criteria:
1. medium-high traffic, so people can see the difference
2. near a place that offers a good service (think schools, libraries, community centers, etc)
3. some place dig-able. While I might be building some planter boxes this year to add some life to places in desperate need of green.. it always makes it easier if there is soil already in the ground.

quick update

hey everyone.

so i didn't officially let you know, but gardening has stopped for the season.
there are two reasons for this:
1) winter is approaching so planting flowers typically does not happen
2) my semester at school has kicked into high gear and i've been needing more time to focus on that

however, i have still been getting a lot of interest in GGing.

my plan is to hopefully get some local florists involved next summer to donate flowers so that we can make a bigger impact. I figure now that there is photographic evidence and stories written about this in the paper it adds to the legitimacy of it. Hopefully flower shop owners will agree!

did you know that Home Depot destroys all of their plants every month that don't sell? and they won't give them to me! and they won't tell me when/where they exactly shred them so that they can 'conveniently get coffee' while i clandestinely run in and save the plants before they go into the chopper. outrageous! if you know anyone that works at a home depot who is willing to bend the rules for the GG cause, please contact me!

I will keep you all posted as to any media hits there are and when the summer gets closer expect the blog to pick back up.

until then, have a warm winter and maybe start some seedlings in your apartment for the first outing next year :)
